Havarti Cheese
Havarti cheese is a popular semi-soft Danish cow’s milk cheese known for its creamy, buttery texture and mild flavor. Originally from Denmark (where it’s sometimes called “flødehavarti” or cream Havarti), it’s now produced worldwide, including in places like Wisconsin in the US.
Key Characteristics
Texture → Smooth, supple, and semi-soft with a springy feel; it has small, irregular eyes (tiny holes) throughout.
Flavor → Buttery and rich, with subtle sweetness, a hint of tang or acidity, and sometimes a mild nuttiness as it ages. Younger versions are very mild and creamy; older ones can become slightly sharper or more hazelnut-like.
Fat content → Around 38%, contributing to its luxurious, melt-in-your-mouth quality.
Aging → Typically aged about 3 months.
It’s incredibly versatile: great for slicing, melting, or grilling. It melts beautifully without separating, making it a favorite for sandwiches and hot dishes.
Common Uses
Snacking — Perfect on its own, with crackers, or on a cheese board paired with fruits (like apples, pears, or grapes), nuts, honey, or olives.
Sandwiches & grilled cheese — Its creamy melt makes it excellent in paninis, burgers, or classic grilled cheese.
Cooking → Use in omelets, casseroles, quesadillas, mac and cheese, or atop baked potatoes.
Flavored varieties — Often infused with dill, caraway, jalapeño, or herbs for extra flair.
